Yes, Stress is Probably Making You Sick

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say you, wonderful reader, are stressed out right now as you try and scan this while dealing with the boss, the kids, the in-laws and whoever else pops up into your day with demands, requests and problems only you feel like you can handle.

A lot of us are stressed all day, every day. The increasingly fast pace of life, the availability of bad news at every turn on your phones, and everything else has truly put us in a stress crisis. We all say stress is bad, but do you know how badly stress can affect your body?

First, the fine print

Stress, in general, isn’t automatically bad. When you are perceiving any type of threat, the most basic part of your brain wakes up to produce what we know as a “fight or flight” response. This is programmed into you from birth, and it’s meant to get you from harm to safety. In your body, what is actually happening is that a part of your brain is signaling for your pituitary gland to release a specific hormone that stimulates your adrenal gland to produce cortisol and adrenaline. These are the two most well-known stress hormones, and their job is to get your body going to the point where you will be able to survive the threat.

Now, the bad part

The problem with the stress response is that it can be activated in situations where it won’t do any good, and it can keep happening if the issue is not resolved. Work stress, for example, can be perceived by your body as a threat, but it’s unlikely you can just quit your job, so your body keeps producing and maintaining higher levels of the stress chemicals in your body when they are only meant to be there in the short term. This, in turn, can have a significant impact on your health, from inflammation to suppression of your immune system. A study published in the Current Opinion in Psychology journal found that chronic stress at an early age or later in life did, in fact, cause the immune system to function improperly (

Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to curing all of your stress, but you can take some action. Think about what you can control and what’s out of your hands, and focus your energy on what you can control. Use stress management practices to tackle what you can’t control, and as always, take care of yourself by eating well, getting enough sleep and exercising regularly.

Huge Study Confirms Purpose and Meaning Add Years to Life

Huge Study Confirms Purpose and Meaning Add Years to Life

Having a purpose in life is more that just a good idea, my friends: it turns out it’s absolutely vital if you want to live as long as you possibly can.

A new study has shown that when you’ve got a sense of purpose, you live longer and you’re more on the ball. This gives a whole new meaning to “finding yourself”!

One 2014 study, spearheaded by the first National Institute on Aging director, Dr. Robert Butler, found that people who had a clear reason to get out of bed each morning were mentally sharper and lived longer than people who did not have a reason (

Now, a newer study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association has confirmed these findings and taken it a step further ( This study looked at 7,000 adults aged 50 and older, all of whom were interviewed via a questionnaire to rank the purpose of their lives.

Researchers assigned a score for life purpose based on the answers they received and followed up with the participants five years later. After five years had passed, the researchers found that the people who had the lowest scores for life purpose were twice as likely to have died than the people with the highest scores.

It’s time to find your purpose

Finding your purpose is obviously important for your lifespan and your overall sense of well-being, as studies have now shown. But it can seem like an impossible task and a question with no satisfying answer. If you have ever found yourself feeling envious of those people who seem to know exactly what they were put on Earth to do, you’re certainly not alone. Many people struggle to uncover what drives them underneath the hood.

The good news is that your sense of purpose won’t necessarily come from your career, and if that’s where you’re looking, it could be why you don’t recognize yours yet. People find their purpose in a variety of ways, from their hobbies to volunteer work or even just watching their grandchildren grow up. In short, your purpose is uniquely yours, and it doesn’t have to be something grand or vital to society. It just needs to be something that is fulfilling to you, motivating you to keep going when things are tough and getting you out of bed on days when you’d rather just stay under the covers.

You Are Able

Behavioral Health - You are able

When I speak to people about their health and lifestyle so many times it seems like there is a sense of hopelessness. For example, if they get diagnosed with diabetes or high blood pressure and they believe they will have to be on a certain protocol for a lifetime. It is time that we realize that we are able. Able to overcome. Able to rise above. Able to reverse the life situation that have found ourselves in. It all begins with …

Knowing that you were made for more. We tend to let the circumstance of our life determine the quality of our life. You are where you are because of your choices, and a little bit of genetics. That’s the great news. So here I want to give you permission. This is to know that you are well able to live the kind of life that you want and deserve. It simply comes down to your choices. If you are overweight, make new choices. If you have high blood pressure, then make new choices. If you have diabetes, then make new choices.

Choices determine lifestyle. Period. There is no form of medicine that can touch the power to choose.

So realize that you are able. You are able to shift your life, create a new course, and live life on your terms. So how do you do it?

I need you to start believing ( (in you again. You have to forget the past. The past is gone. You must focus on today. Today is where all the influence and power is.

You must have a vision for where you want to go, who you want to become, the kind of health that you want to have. You must see it.

Execution is what separates winners and losers. If you want to win with your health and your life, then you must follow through, do the work, and get it done.

I can tell you that it doesn’t matter how tough life has been, you can always turn it around. There is a purpose for your life. The key is to step up, define it, believe it, see it, and live it.

The Power of Gratitude

Behavioral Health - The Power of Gratitude

We focus on the Thanksgiving season as a time to be with family. To get together with those we love and spend time catching up, sharing old memories, and creating new ones. The biggest part of the holiday season as we kick off with Thanksgiving is our sense of being grateful. If you follow much on social media these days, gratitude seems to be a buzz word. When it comes to our health, our mindset will determine more than just about anything else when it comes to how healthy our body is. The reason is simply because when you are thankful, and grateful, then it is impossible to be angry, discouraged, or sad. Research tells us that when we are grateful, that every cell in our body is functioning at a higher level. So what does it take to be grateful? It takes you making a decision to be grateful. So the question really is…

Are you grateful? No I mean really grateful for what you have been given?

Are you grateful for your health? Or are you consumed with how you look or the 5 extra pounds that you need to lose? Really? Be grateful.

Are you grateful for the people in your life? Or are you focused on how they are not meeting your expectations? One day there will be a Thanksgiving without that person…Be grateful.

Are you grateful for the money, job, pension, retirement, home, etc that you have? Or are you watching TV and social media coveting what everyone else has? …Be grateful.

Are you grateful for the years of life that you have been given? Or are you looking at older people wanting to hurry up, or looking at younger people wishing you had your days back? Enjoy where you are and be grateful.
Giving thanks is a personal decision that we all make every single day of our lives. Thankfulness is an attitude and will set you up for having an amazingly healthy life. If you look at any statistic, you will find that those who are grateful, thankful, and mindful of what they have been given, lead the healthiest, most fulfilling lives.

Will that be you?

Make the decision. You choose…

How You Think

Behavioral Health - How You Think

Did you ever realize that how you think determines much about how you live? Our thoughts have amazing power. As a matter of fact, if you look at where someone is in life, relationally, financially, and with their health, then you will see the sum total of their thoughts. So as a person thinks in their heart, so they will become. That has been the secret of the ages. When it comes to our health, it is no different, our health is determined by how we think every single day. When you think about making great choices, guess what? You will end up making great choices.

Sow a thought, reap an action

Sow an action, reap a habit

Sow a habit, reap a character

Sow a character, reap a lifestyle

Our thought patterns are really that simple. Why am I telling you this? Because the National Institutes of Health tell us in several research articles that our health is determined by our behavior more than anything else. It is responsible for over 50 percent of how our health will ultimately turn out. My challenge to you is to watch your thoughts. Begin thinking about how you can upgrade your thinking to become better than you were yesterday.

So what is a great way to start?

1. Pay Attention To Your Words

Words will come true. Watch what you say and how you say it. Our words come from our heart. And you want to make sure what is in your heart is full of life, not death.

2. Take 10 In Your Morning Routine

We are a product of our routine. Every morning I take 10 minutes, no matter what. In those 10 minutes I do 3 things. For about 3 minutes I tell God what I am so grateful for. Then another 3 minutes to pray for those that are on my heart. Then the last 3-4 minutes I focus on where I believe God wants me to go, to do, and whom to serve. This would be your goals and your purpose.

3. Read 30 Minutes Daily

Don’t ever miss. This will begin to teach you and shape you. Make sure to spend at least this time on books that will challenge you to grow.

4. Spend Time With People Ahead of You

You will become who you hang around. Make sure you are investing time with people that are where you want to go. Make sure you have something to give them in return.

Focus on these key areas to maximize your ability to produce the right kind of thoughts each and every day. Your thoughts will begin to shape your mind and ultimately your health.

5 Reasons Why You Can Reach Your Potential

Behavioral Health - 5 Reasons Why You Can Reach Your Potential

Have you ever stopped to think about what your potential is? I asked someone very close to me once about what they believed their reason for living and what their greatest gift and talent was. They couldn’t even answer the question and they were almost 50 years of age! That has been the question that I ask people when I am on the radio, tv, or speaking at live events. Who are you? Why are you here? What talent were you given? Are you using that talent to it’s fullest? Or another way of saying this is…Are you reaching your potential? Many people have never stopped to think about that very question. When it comes to your health nothing is more important than the mental aspect. The CDC says that 85% of the root cause of most health challenges has to do with emotional toxicity and environmental toxicity. Much of what holds us back is in our minds. I have discovered that a large part of this is found in a person not really knowing who they are and why they are here. We hear of the term grief when we think about mourning a loss of a loved one, or something devastating. However, many people live with grief each day and regret because they could have been more in their life. The one thing you can never get back is time. So how do we reach our potential? You have to do several action steps to make it happen.

Listen, I can talk on my radio show about how to lower your blood pressure, lower blood sugar, lose weight, balance hormones, have more energy, and get your physical health on track. That’s the easy part. For the most part, your health is where it is right now because of your emotional state. Let’s get to work on that.

1.Define What You Are Good At
We are all great at something. Think for a moment at what comes the easiest to you. For example, I had to study extra hard in school to attain 3 doctorates. It wasn’t easy, but quite painful actually. However, the day I stood up in front of 10,000 people and delivered a message, it was the easiest and most natural thing I had ever done. And I never took a class for it, never studied for it. I was naturally talented at it. You have to find your strength and work it for empowering your health

2.Work At It
You have to work at what you are great at and get even better. Your gift will carry you, but you must stay at it and develop it.

3.Train Your Thinking
We become what we think about all day long. To reach your potential you must control how you think. Your thoughts will determine your overall success. And this is especially true with your health.

4.Take Care Of Your Body
This is where your health comes in. Many people lose their health in life because they don’t have a strong enough of a “Why”. What is your WHY? Find it. You have to. Because when you have a strong enough of a WHY, like your family, or your kids, then lowering blood pressure with better lifestyle choices becomes easy. Get it?

5.Be Consistent
Who won the race? The tortoise or the hare? If you don’t remember, go read it again. Life is a marathon and not a sprint, although you need to sprint each day to win. The marathon is staying with your main gift and talent. Never stop using it to serve others. The sprint is going at it hard every day and never letting up.

Outside of many of the genetic diseases, health is typically easy to attain and maintain if you have the right foundation. To reach your potential it starts with knowing who you are and why you are here. Everything else will fall into place from there.

The Reason You Can’t Lose Weight

Behavioral Health - The Reason You Can’t Lose Weight

One of the top questions that seems to come my way is why people can’t lose the weight. It seems like everyone is looking for the latest silver bullet and diet solution. I met a businessman on a flight the other day and he asked what I did. Of course I explained and he got excited and said, ”I have been wanting to lose this gut and some of the extra pounds. He asked if I could help. Of course, I said. So I asked him some basic questions and it came down to food choices. Now this guy was on about 5 different medications ranging from blood pressure to blood sugar. Amazing, but typical. When I told him that he would need to give up the donuts for breakfast every day as a starter, you would have thought I asked him to shoot his dog. The conversation quickly ended as I told him that unless he can get out of his own way, he would never reach his health goals.

I’m pretty hard when it comes to whining. If you are asking me to play “patty cake” with you to make you feel good, you came to the wrong doc. I want to see you do well. I want to see you live healthier than ever before. I wan to see you lose the weight. I want to see you thrive. There are reasons that you are not losing the weight for empowering your health. Legitimate ones.

Many times it is our poor daily habits that are holding us back. Deciding that you want to get well is the absolute key to living the life you want to live. So when it comes to losing weight we have a saying in our organization.

“Pursue health, and the body that you want will follow.”

With weight loss this stands true. When you focus on your goal of lowering blood sugar, or having better cholesterol, or reducing inflammation, then the body will respond in many other ways including hitting your target weight goals

Let’s look at some steps to help you get there.

1.Create Your Target
Know your number. If you want to be 150 lbs then write it down. There is power in writing it down and putting it in front of you. People will tell me what they would “like” to have. Decide what you WANT, not what you would LIKE. Make it happen.

2.Create Habits
On the radio I mention often, you are a sum total of the thoughts you have every day, and the actions that you take. It will take approximately 67 days to create your new habit of eating healthy, exercising, or sleeping better. So get started.

3.Create Better Thinking
Your self -talk is powerful. Make sure you write down how you are going to talk to yourself every day. You take control. Rather than saying I’ll never lose weight. Ill always be fat, I’ll never get off the medicine. Guess what, science has proven that if you keep that type of talk up, then you won’t hit your goals. Start with saying, I will lose this weight and hit my target of 150 lbs.

4.Create Better Relationships
You are a sum total of who you hang out with. Getting the family and friends on board with your goals and success in weight loss is very important. Get everyone on the same page. Or create your own book.

5.Create The Vision
Where there is no vision, there is no victory. Create the perfect idea of what you want your health to look like. Now go after it. You must EN-vision your vision. It is the most important piece for building a health coach mindset for success..

Beating Chronic Disease – The Power To Believe

Behavioral Health - Beating Chronic Disease - The Power To Believe

We just finished filming our new reality television show based on reversing chronic disease. It was amazing. You will see it soon on the Discovery Channel. My goal has always been to take someone past the 4 walls of a clinic, or past a quick conversation on my radio show, and see them through the entire process of gaining better health. Wow. We worked on several key areas that made the difference. The most important was their mindset. We had the guests in the mansion for 10 days. So what can you really accomplish in 10 days? A lot. The most important key to mindset is taking responsibility for it. I taught the guests some major keys in rebuilding their mindset to get them to a better place to win the battle against themselves. Ultimately it is your lifestyle choices that brought you into this situation that you are in. Diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, and the list goes on. Eating healthy and exercising is a very important part of the process, however health is 20 percent of head knowledge and 80 percent of knowing what to do. I can get people to eat baked fish and broccoli, I can even get them to get themselves out of bed and go exercise. The challenge for many is to have the hope to know that they can be more and have more than where they are. Once you can get that across, then they can accomplish anything with their health. Here are some of the principles that I taught the guests.

1.Talk To Yourself
Whether you admit it or not we talk to ourselves continually. We are in a constant place of telling ourselves something either positive, or negative. What we say matters. It programs our subconscious mind. Make sure to speak life and positive affirmationsto yourself each day. It will show itself in who you become.

2.Speak Life To Others
Remember when your mother told you. “If you can’t say something good to someone, then don’t say anything at all?” It is so true. Set a goal to find the one thing you appreciate about anyone that you come in contact with, and tell them about it. Watch what happens

3.Your Habits Determine Your Health
This sums it up. If you are lazy, you will have a lazy body. If you eat junk food, you will have junk cells. And then don’t get upset when your body breaks down and has to take drugs. On the other hand, when you eat health, exercise, and reset well, you will experience vibrant and magnificent health. Health is a gift, and health is also a choice.
